University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI)

UPCI Summer Academy 2013 6K Run & Walk

8:30 am, Saturday, August 3, 2013 - Schenley Park Oval (Two 3K Loops)

The Program

Our program offers national and regional students with eight weeks of didactic and experiential learning at five different locations. Each site provides students with the opportunity to spend daily time in a dedicated research mentor's laboratory, developing a project that is presented in a poster session and oral presentation at the end of the eight weeks. Students experience shadowing opportunities, field trips to local poster sessions and scientific activities, and cameos by guest speakers at five UPCI sites:

  • Cancer Biology (Hillman Cancer Center, Shadyside Campus)
  • Magee Women's Cancer Research Center (WCRC) (Oakland campus)
  • Cancer Immunology (Oakland campus)
  • Drug Discovery, Systems and Computational Biology (DISCO-BIO) (Oakland campus)
  • Computer Sciences, Biological Sciences and Biomedical Informatics (CoSBBI) (Shadyside)

6K Run & Walk

The Student-Organized Run will take place on Saturday, August 3rd at 8:30 am, starting at the Schenley Park swimming pool. It will be held at Schenley Park at the Schenley Oval. There will be water stops during the Run and we are happy to provide Smiley Cookies donated by Eat and Park and Dave and Andy's Ice Cream, water will be provided by Giant Eagle. The first 200 people to sign up will receive a T-shirt along with their bib in their information packet. For those who are interested we will record the times and there will be prizes for the individual winners in each gender. Medals, donated by Pittsburgh Trophy Company, will be awarded at the completion of the race for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd male and female runners. Runners/walkers are more than welcome to join.

All proceeds will go to funding for the UPCI Summer Academy to support stipends and activities fees. The academy attracts the best and brightest and those underrepresented in the biomedical sciences, helping high school students gain lab experience over the summer. This provides these teens with a head start in the biological basis of cancer, Women's Cancers, Drug Discovery, and Biomedical Informatics. Join the 6K Run/Walk and support the UPCI Summer Academy cancer research program and help students that are underrepresented or under privileged gain research experience and support the trip to the NCI!

Minimum Donation: $20 per person (or more if you would like); $25 if you sign up on August 3rd at the Run.
