UPCI Research Programs

UPCI receives a total of $154 million in peer-reviewed research grants, and is ranked 10th in funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The Institute's 500 faculty and staff, representing over 30 disciplines, work together closely to improve the understanding of cancer and to develop new lifesaving procedures in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The University of Pittsburgh is ranked 7th in funding from the NIH.

UPCI research programs fall into the following categories: Clinical (oriented mainly towards cancer in mammals), Basic (focused on the cellular and molecular activities of cancer), and Cancer Control & Population Sciences (studying the effects of environmental, geographical and behavioral effects on cancer). In keeping with UPCI's translational focus, program activities often span multiple research areas, but have been categorized within the group that best matches their primary research focus. Other efforts that are not formalized as research programs are captured on our Other UPCI Activities page.
