UPMC CANCER CENTERS MAKE U.S NEWS & WORLD REPORT'S TOP 10
PITTSBURGH, July 8 – UPMC Cancer Centers has been ranked 10th in the nation for cancer care in US News & World Report's annual Best Hospitals survey. This ranking, the highest placement ever for UPMC Cancer Centers, reflects the hard work and commitment of UPMC Cancer Centers' staff and oncologists, the expansion of the locations and services available to patients, and the research and advanced treatments being developed at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
The Best Hospitals ranking looks at 17 different specialties through a composite ranking of structure (e.g., state-of-the-art technology, number of discharges), risk-adjusted mortality calculations, and rankings by physician specialists of up to five “best hospitals” across the U.S. in their specialty. UPMC Cancer Centers moved 11 spots, from number 21 in 2004, to number 10 this year.
This ranking, combined with strong showings in 14 other specialties, also helped UPMC to achieve its highest placement ever in the U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” ranking. UPMC ranked higher than any other hospital in Pennsylvania at 13 in the country - from a pool of over 6000 hospitals across the U.S. The hospital system has been named to the prestigious “Honor Roll” for the sixth time in seven years as one of the “nation's best hospitals.” Other hospitals included on the Honor Roll include Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General and UCLA. This year, no other Pittsburgh hospitals are ranked in any specialty area.
