Awards and Accolades: UPMC and University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences Announce Faculty, Staff Achievements
PITTSBURGH, January 11, 2008 – The faculty, staff and students of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences often are recognized by academic and scientific societies and other prestigious organizations for their significant achievements and exceptional leadership. Among those whose work has been acknowledged recently with awards and accolades are the following:
- Freddie Fu, MD, professor and chairman of orthopaedic surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, recently was named Honorary Member of the Chilean Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the 43rd Chilean Meeting of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Vina Del Mar, Chile. The distinction is given to visiting professors who contribute to the knowledge and development of Chilean orthopaedic surgeons.
- Isamu Sando, MD, emeritus professor, department of otolaryngology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, received the Order of the Sacred Treasure from the Emperor of Japan. The Order was established in 1888 and is awarded for long and meritorious service. Dr. Sando has published hundreds of scientific papers and presented them nationally and internationally during his long career.
- Patricia D. Kroboth, PhD, dean, University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, has been elected as the 2008 Council of Deans chair for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), the national organization representing the interests of pharmacy education and educators and comprised of all 105 U.S. colleges and schools of pharmacy. AACP was founded in 1900 and is committed to excellence in pharmacy education.
- Ellen Frank, PhD, professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, has been selected by the American College of Psychiatrists as the 2008 Award for Research in Mood Disorders recipient. This award is given to an individual who has advanced the understanding and treatment of mood disorders. Dr. Frank has pursued a program of clinically relevant research on the psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy of recurrent mood disorders, resulting in significant changes in the treatment of depression and bipolar disorder.
- Evan L. Waxman, MD, PhD, associate professor of ophthalmology, University of Pittsburgh, was presented with the Humanitarian Service Award by the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology in December. Dr. Waxman received the award for his outstanding service in establishing a mobile eye clinic to provide free eye examinations to uninsured patients in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas.
- Marina Posvar, patient navigation services coordinator, Hillman Cancer Center, was awarded the American Cancer Society's, Greater Pittsburgh unit, 2006-2007 Volunteer of the Year Award. Ms. Posvar has been a tireless advocate for cancer patients through her continued involvement in fundraisers, committees and community education events.
- The American Cancer Society has chosen the Hillman Cancer Center to receive the bronze Mission of Impact Award for Partners in Promotion: Hillman Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society. The award honors the relationship between the two organizations.
- The Allegheny County Medical Society (ACMS) will present David L. Katz, MD, clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, with the Frederick M. Jacob Outstanding ACMS Service Award during the annual installation of officers ceremony on Jan. 12. Dr. Katz has been with the ACMS since 1962 and has served the Society in many capacities, including treasurer and board of directors member. He also has served on numerous ACMS committees throughout his career.
- Janice Pringle, PhD, research assistant professor of pharmacy and therapeutics, University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, was an invited clinical expert in a studio-taped roundtable debate for the program The Physician's Role in Guiding Patients to Improved Medication Adherence hosted by AstraZeneca and Advogent.
