Lecture Title: Self-Regulation Failure and Smoking: A Multimodal Analysis of Cigarette Cravings

Abstract: I will present research examining cigarette craving, a state of mind that can contribute to self-regulation failures. This work draws upon research and methods developed both within and outside of psychology. I first will describe studies indicating how robust manipulations of cigarette cravings alter the way that we process information pertaining to smoking a cigarette. These cognitive shifts include changes in (a) attentional processes, (b) generation and evaluation of smoking-related information, and (c) temporal cognition. I also will discuss diverse research examining positive anticipatory cravings, and consider data suggesting that smokers when in a neutral state have little insight into the power of their future craving states. While craving has important links to addiction, it also merits study as a universally experienced state that affect many of us on a regular basis.
