G. David Roodman, MD, PhD
G. David Roodman, MD, PhD is the Leader of the Myeloma Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, and is a Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine/Hematology-Oncology, Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine, and Director of the Center for Bone Biology at UPMC. Dr. Roodman received both his MD, and a PhD in biochemistry, from the University of Kentucky. His postgraduate training included an internship at the University of Kentucky, and a residency and fellowship in hematology at the University of Minnesota. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, with a specialty in Hematology.
Dr. Roodman is both a clinician and researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, where his area of research interest includes cellular and molecular events controlling the formation and activity of osteoclasts in myeloma. He is active in both clinical and lab-based research where he is funded by two NIH RO1 grants, and is the Director of a National Institutes of Health Program Project Grant. Other funding includes a VA Merit Review grant, and the prestigious Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation Collaborative award. Presently, his clinical research includes Phase I, II, and III clinical trials of novel therapies in multiple myeloma. His research studies focus on the cause and treatment of myeloma bone disease.
Dr. Roodman has written numerous abstracts, reviews, and articles for such prestigious journals as the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, and Blood, among others. In addition, Dr. Roodman has lectured internationally on current concepts in the control of osteoclast differentiation and function in myeloma. He has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.
