Dr. Van Houten is the Leader of the UPCI Molecular and Cellular Cancer Biology Program, Richard Cyert Professor of Molecular Oncology, and a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Van Houten joined the University of Pittsburgh in 2008 after 9 years at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, NIH. He received his PhD from the University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and did postdoctoral training at the University of North Carolina with Dr. Aziz Sancar. Dr. Van Houten’s research focuses on the structure and function of DNA repair proteins and the fate of mitochondrial DNA damage in mammalian cells. He has authored over 120 scientific articles, holds three patents, and has been recognized with five NIH Merit Awards and an NIH Director’s Award.
