Overview and Goals

The Prostate and Urologic Cancer Program (PUCP) focuses on basic, translational and clinical research related to prostate and other genitourinary (GU) tumors. The Program’s goals are:

  1. to develop an improved understanding of the biology of prostate and other GU cancers,
  2. to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to these tumors, and
  3. to develop new concepts applicable to the prevention of prostate or GU cancers

These goals are approached principally through translational studies, which move concepts that are generated or expanded upon in the basic science laboratory to the clinic (as well as in the opposite direction). These translational studies are the centerpiece of the Program but are supported by basic science investigations along with clinical trials. The PUCP promotes interaction among its interdisciplinary membership, which includes urologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, psychologists, epidemiologists, pharmacologists, and cellular and molecular biologists.
