Other Analytical Chemical Instrumentation:

Perkin-Elmer 1100 atomic absorption spectrometer with EGA 400 graphite furnace, AS 40 furnace autosampler, data management software, Hewlett-Packard Vectra computer, and Panasonic KX-P1091i printer. The Facility is well equipped with state-of-the-art spectrophotometers; fluorometers; ELISA readers; balances; centrifuges; microcomputers and software; refrigeration, freezers, and ultracold freezers; chemical fume hoods; incubators; and electrophoresis instrumentation.

HPLC instrumentation is operated through a unified data collection and analysis system, which is currently based on ChromPerfect Chromatography software. Each chromatograph is equipped with an interface that sends the collected raw data to a Gateway Pentium computer. Data collected by the computer can be archived and analyzed on site or remotely using analyze-only software. Data manipulation includes reintegration, recalculation, baseline subtraction, run comparison, ratioing, and batch reprocessing of the data. Data can be transferred via the closedcircuit cable network linking the individual PCs within the UPCI laboratories. Data may be graphically displayed in a number of formats.

Suitable facilities exist for handling irritating, toxic, and potentially hazardous materials. There are ample mical fume hoods and numerous biohazard laminar air flow hoods. As a requirement of our having served previously as the Pharmacology and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Center for the Veterans Administration AIDS Treatment Cooperative Study, the Facility has established procedures and an isolated facility for the handling of infectious samples.
